Elizabeth Moselakgomo Murder: Three in Court

Three Face Smartwatch Charges

KEMPTON PARK, 13 October 2026 — Three men have appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court in connection with the alleged theft and resale of a smartwatch belonging to murdered Gauteng runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.

The court heard that the device was allegedly purchased for just R900 less than 24 hours after Moselakgomo disappeared, before changing hands in transactions involving R4,000.

The accused, identified as Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat, appeared in court on Monday, 12 October 2026.

They face charges connected to the alleged handling, possession and resale of the smartwatch, including money laundering.

Importantly, none of the three men has been charged with Moselakgomo’s murder. The proceedings concern the alleged handling of her property, while the investigation into her death remains a separate matter.

Elizabeth Moselakgomo Smartwatch Case Explained

Moselakgomo, 38, disappeared on 9 September 2026 after leaving her Kempton Park home for a routine run.

Her body was discovered in the Rhodesfield area on 12 September, three days after she was last seen alive.

Her disappearance and death attracted widespread attention, with relatives and members of the public calling for answers.

The latest court proceedings have revealed allegations about what happened to her smartwatch shortly after she went missing.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the device was acquired less than 24 hours after Moselakgomo was last seen.

Investigators subsequently traced transactions involving the watch, leading to charges against three men.

Smartwatch Allegedly Bought For R900

NPA regional spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole outlined the State’s allegations concerning the smartwatch.

According to prosecutors, Chibuzor operated a second-hand goods business in Kempton Park.

He allegedly purchased the smartwatch from an unidentified person for R900 without obtaining or recording the seller’s identification details and other information required under the Second-Hand Goods Act.

The legislation regulates second-hand goods transactions and establishes record-keeping obligations intended to assist in preventing the trade of stolen property.

Prosecutors allege that Chibuzor subsequently sold the device to Sekhukhune on 10 September 2026.

The price of that transaction has not been established in the publicly reported account.

Watch Allegedly Resold For R4,000

The State alleges that Sekhukhune registered the smartwatch to his Gmail account after Moselakgomo’s personal profile and settings had been erased.

He allegedly sold the device to Moat for R4,000.

According to the prosecution, Moat later advertised the smartwatch on social media and sold it to a fourth individual for the same amount.

The fourth individual has not been charged because prosecutors say there is insufficient evidence linking that person to the alleged offences.

The transactions have become central to the prosecution’s case concerning the movement of Moselakgomo’s belongings.

However, the allegations have not yet been proven in court.

Three Accused Face Criminal Charges

The three men face different charges arising from the alleged transactions.

Kenneth Chibuzor faces charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Second-Hand Goods Act, money laundering and theft. Alternative charges concern the possession or receipt of property suspected to have been stolen.

Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune faces money laundering and theft charges, with alternative charges relating to the possession or receipt of stolen property.

Danial Anthony Moat faces similar charges involving money laundering and the alleged handling of the smartwatch.

The charges relate to the device and its alleged resale, rather than direct accusations that the three men killed Moselakgomo.

All three are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Two Accused Granted R10,000 Bail

The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court granted Sekhukhune and Moat bail of R10,000 each.

Chibuzor’s bail application was postponed to 19 October 2026.

The State is opposing his release on bail while authorities verify his immigration status.

Chibuzor, identified in court as a Nigerian national, is subject to a verification process involving the Department of Home Affairs.

The verification concerns his individual immigration circumstances and does not establish guilt in relation to the criminal charges.

The matter is expected to return to court on 19 October.

Murder Investigation Remains Separate

Although the smartwatch belonged to Moselakgomo, the court proceedings do not establish who was responsible for her death.

The NPA’s charges against the three men concern the alleged acquisition, possession and disposal of her property.

The identity of the person who originally supplied the smartwatch to the second-hand goods dealer has not been established in the publicly reported court proceedings.

The distinction between the smartwatch case and the murder investigation is important.

Evidence about the movement of the device may be relevant to investigators, but possession or resale of property does not by itself prove involvement in a killing.

Calls For Justice Continue

Moselakgomo’s death has drawn attention to concerns about the safety of women exercising in public spaces.

The 38-year-old runner’s disappearance during a routine outing and the subsequent discovery of her body have left her family and community seeking answers.

The latest proceedings provide information about the alleged movement of one of her personal belongings, but they do not resolve the circumstances of her death.

The ongoing investigation will need to establish the evidence necessary to identify and prosecute anyone responsible for her killing.

What Happens Next In Court?

The smartwatch case is scheduled to return to the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on 19 October 2026 for Chibuzor’s bail application.

Authorities are expected to continue verifying his immigration status.

Further proceedings will determine how the charges against the three accused progress.

The separate investigation into Moselakgomo’s murder also remains an important unresolved matter.

Ubuntu9Media will continue following verified court developments and the investigation into Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo’s death.
