End Of Era Dis-Chem
End of an era for Dis-Chem as founder Ivan Saltzman retires after 48 years
JOHANNESBURG – One of South Africa’s most influential retail success stories has reached a historic milestone, with Dis-Chem co-founder Ivan Saltzman officially retiring after nearly five decades at the helm of the pharmacy giant.
Saltzman’s retirement marks the end of a 48-year journey that transformed a single pharmacy in Johannesburg into one of Southern Africa’s largest healthcare retail chains, serving millions of customers across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
End of an era for Dis-Chem
Ivan Saltzman officially stepped down from his executive role on 30 June 2026, bringing to a close almost half a century of active leadership at the company he co-founded with his wife, Lynette Saltzman, in 1978.
Although he relinquished his executive responsibilities, Dis-Chem has indicated that the company will continue to benefit from his experience and strategic insight in a non-executive capacity.
His departure follows an earlier leadership transition in June 2023, when he stepped down as chief executive officer and handed the role to Rui Morais, the group’s former chief financial officer.
From one pharmacy to a retail powerhouse
Ivan and Lynette Saltzman opened the first Dis-Chem pharmacy in Mondeor, Johannesburg, in 1978 with a vision of making healthcare products more affordable and accessible.
Their innovative discount pharmacy model challenged the traditional retail pharmacy sector and helped reshape how South Africans purchased medicines, vitamins, beauty products and health-related goods.
Over the following decades, Dis-Chem expanded into one of the country’s largest listed healthcare retailers, operating more than 300 stores and employing thousands of people across Southern Africa.
A year of major leadership changes
Saltzman’s retirement comes during a period of significant leadership transition for the JSE-listed retailer.
In addition to his departure, his son Saul Saltzman recently resigned from the Dis-Chem board after previously stepping down as an executive director earlier this year. The move forms part of a broader restructuring of the company’s leadership as it prepares for its next phase of growth.
Long-serving founding director Stanley Goetsch also stepped down from his executive role, bringing another chapter of Dis-Chem’s founding leadership to a close.
Building a billion-rand business
Under Ivan Saltzman’s leadership, Dis-Chem evolved from a family-owned pharmacy into one of South Africa’s most recognised retail brands.
The company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2016 and has continued expanding its footprint through new stores, private-label products, wholesale operations and digital healthcare services.
The Saltzman family’s success has also translated into significant personal wealth, with recent estimates placing them among South Africa’s dollar billionaires.
Challenges remain
While celebrating its founding legacy, Dis-Chem continues to face a challenging retail environment.
The company has highlighted pressure on consumers from higher living costs, fuel prices and cautious household spending, factors that have weighed on earnings growth despite continued sales expansion.
Management has nevertheless expressed confidence that the retailer remains well positioned for long-term growth under its current leadership team.
Legacy of innovation
Industry observers widely credit Ivan Saltzman with helping modernise South Africa’s retail pharmacy sector.
His emphasis on wider product ranges, competitive pricing and customer-focused healthcare services helped establish Dis-Chem as a household name.
Chairman Laurence Nestadt described Saltzman’s contribution as being “without parallel,” recognising his role in building one of the country’s most successful healthcare retailers over nearly five decades.
Looking ahead
Although Ivan Saltzman’s retirement marks the end of an era, Dis-Chem enters its next chapter with an established management team, a nationwide retail footprint and a strong brand built over almost 50 years.
The company now faces the challenge of sustaining the entrepreneurial vision that drove its remarkable growth while adapting to changing consumer behaviour, digital healthcare trends and increasing competition in the retail pharmacy sector.
For many South Africans, however, Ivan Saltzman’s retirement represents more than a leadership change—it closes one of the most remarkable entrepreneurial stories in the country’s retail history.
