Absa Smart ID Services

Good news for Absa customers in South Africa as Smart ID services launch at branches

Johannesburg – Thousands of Absa customers will soon be able to apply for Smart ID cards at selected bank branches following a new partnership between the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and the banking group.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced that Absa has become the fourth major bank in South Africa to offer Smart ID services through the department’s digital transformation programme. The rollout is aimed at making identity document services more accessible while reducing pressure on Home Affairs offices.

12 Absa branches to launch first

The first phase of the rollout will see 12 Absa branches begin processing Smart ID card applications on a walk-in basis. Absa has also confirmed plans to expand the service to approximately 60 additional branches before the end of the year, significantly increasing access for customers across the country.

The initiative forms part of the Department of Home Affairs’ broader strategy to modernise public services by partnering with South Africa’s major banks.

Easier access for customers

The new service will allow qualifying South Africans to complete Smart ID card applications at participating Absa branches instead of visiting traditional Home Affairs offices.

The expansion follows similar services already introduced through other participating banks, giving customers more convenient options to access government services.

Digital transformation continues

Minister Schreiber has described the expansion of bank-based Home Affairs services as an important step towards creating a more efficient, technology-driven public service.

By extending Smart ID facilities through banks, the department aims to reduce queues, improve service delivery and make essential identity services more widely available.

Customers are encouraged to monitor announcements from both Absa and the Department of Home Affairs for details of participating branches and service availability as the rollout progresses.
