South African Ambassador to France Found Dead in Paris

South Africa is mourning after the sudden death of its ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa. He was found outside the Hyatt hotel in Paris on 30 September 2025.

According to French media, Mthethwa’s wife reported him missing after receiving a troubling message. Hours later, his body was discovered at the foot of the hotel. Reports suggest he may have fallen from the 22nd floor. Authorities in Paris have launched an investigation into the incident.

The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation expressed deep sorrow at the loss. Mthethwa, a former minister, was appointed as ambassador to France and UNESCO in 2024. His death leaves a gap in South Africa’s diplomatic mission in Europe.
