Former Transnet CEOs Arrested Over R93 Million
Former Transnet CEOs Arrested in Major Corruption Case
Two former CEOs of Transnet, Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, were arrested on June 30, 2025. They face charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The charges relate to a R93 million locomotive deal linked to the Gupta network.
These arrests are part of South Africa’s continued push to prosecute high-level corruption cases.
What Are the Allegations?
The charges stem from a 2015 locomotive procurement deal. The contract was worth R54 billion and involved over 1,000 locomotives.
Investigators say Molefe and Gama approved irregular payments through Trillian Asset Management. This company has ties to the Gupta family. The money was allegedly funneled to associates like Kuben Moodley, with no clear justification.
Moreover, the Zondo Commission had recommended their prosecution back in 2022. Its final report detailed how Transnet executives enabled state capture.
Bail Granted in Court Appearance
The two executives appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. They were each granted R50,000 bail. Former CFO Anoj Singh and engineer Thamsanqa Jiyane also appeared on similar charges.
Court proceedings will continue later this year. The State plans to present forensic audits and board records as evidence.
Political Shockwaves Follow the Arrests
These arrests have political implications too. Molefe currently serves as a Member of Parliament under the MK Party. His involvement in an active fraud case raises questions about vetting and ethical standards.
“This is a turning point for public accountability,” said a legal analyst. “The law is finally catching up.”
