Leadership Shifts Spark Debate

The EFF held a major conference in Polokwane last night. The aim was to address internal challenges and reset the party’s agenda. However, the event quickly drew criticism from both members and political analysts. Many claimed it lacked transparency and genuine democratic processes.

One of the most controversial moves was the disbandment of Limpopo’s provincial leadership. Julius Malema, the party’s president, announced this decision in response to declining electoral support. Nevertheless, critics argued it was more about consolidating power than encouraging reform. For example, Tshilidzi Maraga, a former EFF leader, described it as a “PR stunt” meant to benefit insiders.

Furthermore, Jossey Buthane, the former Limpopo chairperson, defected to the ANC shortly before the conference. He cited dissatisfaction with the party’s internal structures and leadership style.

Calls for Unity – But Are They Enough?

During his address, Malema called for unity and discipline within the EFF. Moreover, he warned members against using media platforms to advance personal agendas. His message was firm: stay focused on the party’s vision, or step aside.

Despite this, long-standing issues of factionalism continue to divide the EFF. Analysts believe these internal struggles may weaken the party’s position going forward. Consequently, the party risks alienating loyal members if it does not create space for open dialogue and fair leadership transitions.

Public Perception and Political Risk

On one hand, supporters view the leadership shakeup as a necessary measure to refocus the party. On the other hand, critics say it shows a worrying trend of authoritarianism and exclusion.

Meanwhile, the broader public remains unsure. Some see the EFF as a bold force for change. Others, however, are concerned about the party’s ability to maintain internal democracy and discipline.

As a result, the EFF’s future depends on its ability to balance strong leadership with inclusive governance. Looking ahead, upcoming elections will test the party’s ability to regain trust and present a unified front.
